Car import regulations and customs duties in Spain

    Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV)


    Once the vehicle is moved to Spain, the vehicle has to pass Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV). The inspection is carried out to check if the vehicle meets the required standards, such as environment and road safety.  


    The necessary documents:


    • Driving license
    • Vehicle technical inspection
    • COC Certificate
  • Documents required at the time of vehicle clearance
    • Original Commercial Invoice (Purchase Invoice)
    • Original Certificate of Title and Registration
    • Copy of Passport
    • Identification Card (Documento Nacional de Identidad)
    • Drivers License and International Insurance Policy (green card)
    • Liability Insurance- current policy at the origin
    • Valid plates
  • Duties and taxes
    • 21 % VAT (IVA), pay at the customs offices.
    • Registrations tax (Impuesto sobre Determinados Medios de Transporte) of 0 to 14.75 % depends on the vehicles' CO2 emission.
  • Registration of an imported vehicle

    Once the imported vehicle has passed the customs clearance, it should get registered at the provisional traffic department (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico).


    The documents, required for the registration:

    • Original and copy of passport
    • Residence proof and original NIE number certificate
    • Original vehicle registration and proof of the ownership
    • Proof of Spanish motor vehicle liability insurance (seguro de vehiculos)
    • EC certificate of conformity homologacion
    • Proof of payment of road tax (Impuesto sobre Vehiculos de Traccion Mecanica)
    • Proof of technical vehicle inspection
  • NB

    The provisional traffic department (Jefatura Provincial de Trafico) issues temporary plates. Please note that these plates are valid for a limited period of time, usually 10 days.
