Car import regulations and customs duties in Mauritius
  • Year Restriction

    All used vehicles purchased to Mauritius must be within 1.5 to 4 years from the original date of registration.

    Vehicles must also be registered within 1 year from its Date of Manufacture.



  • Steering wheel position

    Right-hand drive vehicles are only permitted to be imported in Mauritius.

  • Documents required at the time of vehicle clearance
    • Original Invoice indicating the FOB and/or CIF value of the car
    • Bill of lading / Airway bill
    • Bill of entry
    • Insurance certificate (if applicable)
    • Certificate of inspection (if applicable)
    • Certificate of origin (if applicable)
    • Cancellation of Registration Certificate.
    • Import Permit


  • Duties and taxes

    Excise duties liable on vehicles based on their cylinder capacity are as mentioned below:

    For Cars:
    • Less than 550 cc: 15%
    • Between 550cc and 1600cc: 55%
    • Between 1601cc to 2000cc: 75%
    • More than 2000cc: 100%
    For Vans:
    • Up to 1600cc: 55%
    • More than 1600cc: 100%


    Vehicles imported into Mauritius are accountable for Value Added Tax (VAT) of 15 %. VAT is payable on the sum of the following amounts:

    • Import duty and excise duty
    • Customs value of the vehicle
    • Freight and insurance costs incurred in transporting the vehicle to Mauritius


  • Registration of an imported vehicle

    The submission of an application for an import permit is carried out electronically under the TradeNet Phase 5 System through customs brokers/companies. The individual or company wishing to submit their own applications electronically has to register themselves with Mauritius Network Services Ltd (MNS).

     The used cars imported should also be registered with the National Transport Authority in the name of the importer


  • NB

    Conditions under which the vehicles should be imported:

    • Be in good running condition and not damaged.
    • Have the original chassis.
    • Not be fitted with any bull bar.
