The vehicle must not be more than eight years old from the year of first registration. The difference between the registration date and the manufacturing date should not be more than a year.
All vehicles imported must be Right Hand Drive (RHD). However, special vehicles such as ambulances, fire engines, and large construction vehicles are exempted from this ban.
Mombasa
The inspection of all imported used cars in Kenya is conducted to rate the overall road condition of the car. If the vehicle fails, it will not be cleared by customs. There are 2 types of vehicle inspection used in Kenya, and they are as follows:
· Japan Export Vehicle Inspection Center, also known as JEVIC
· Quality Inspection Services Japan, also known as QISJ
The vehicle must comply with the Kenya Bureau of Standards requirements of Legal Notice No. 78 of 15th July 2005 (Verification of Conformity to Kenya Standards Imports Order, 2005) and KS1515:2000 Kenya Standard Code of Practice for Inspection of Road Vehicles.
The following taxes/duties are payable for motor vehicle imports based on customs value.
Import Duty (25%)
Excise Duty
This duty varies with the vehicle category.
Value Added Tax (16%)
Import Declaration Fees: minimum USD 5000 or approximately 2,25% CIF, depending on what is higher
Railway Development Levy (1.5%)
